Adult male Red Wolves typically has a height at the shoulder of 38 – 40 centimetres (15 – 16 inches), a length of 140 – 165 centimetres (4.5 – 5.5 feet) and weighs 18 – 36 kilograms (40 – 80 pounds). The Red Wolf is a medium-sized canid, smaller and more slender than the Grey Wolf, however, the Red Wolf is larger than the coyote. In the last century, however, persecution, habitat destruction and hybridizations with Coyotes have brought the Red Wolf to the brink of extinction.

On the basis of further study, the Red Wolfs historic range is now thought to have extended further north into the northeastern USA and extreme eastern Canada. It is thought that the Red Wolfs original distribution included much of eastern North America, where Red Wolves were found from Pennsylvania in the east, Florida in the south and Texas in the west. More active at dusk and dawn, red wolves are elusive and generally avoid humans and human activities. The Red Wolf (Canis Rufus) is the rarest and most endangered of all the wolf species. Wolf packs have specific territories that they actively defend against other canids, including other wolves. Survival rates are affected by disease, malnutrition and predation. Less than half of the wolf pups born in the wild survive to adulthood. Dens have also been found in holes dug in the ground near felled tree trunks or piles of forest debris. Puppies are usually born in April or May in well-hidden dens that may be located in hollow trees, stream banks, and sand mounds. Red wolves tend to form pairs for life and mate once a year in February.

Almost all of the one- to two-year-old offspring leave the pack or “disperse” to form their own pack. The older offspring will often help the breeding couple raise their young. Typical packs consist of five to eight animals, including a pair of breeding adults and their offspring of different years.

The red wolf is a social animal that lives in packs.
